Google's Project Tango: What you need to know

Project Tango

Google is always trying crazy, futuristic things, from driver-less cars to Google Glass. The latest project that now faces publicity is Project Tango, the idea of scanning the environment around you with your mobile device. Not every device can do this yet, only a smartphone made by Google has this ability. This is planned to be given out to developers so that they can create games or mapping tools with the hope that it will reach it's full potential.

The phone will understand the dimensions of the room by simply holding it and walking around. The surrounding environment will be scanned using a motion tracking camera and a depth sensor. That can help in a lot of areas that would normally take months to design with different, older technology. It is worth mentioning that Tango comes out of Advanced Technology and Projects Group, a part of Motorola that Google kept, the same group responsible for Project Ara (Modular Phone).

Google hopes to provide more accurate mapping of the entire world, more specifically indoor maps. This is great right? Well what happens to privacy when you scan your home to play a game? Does Google get a copy of that data? These are similar questions that followed after the Iphone 5s fingerprint scanner was announced. The bottom line here is that this technology is really powerful with huge potential and we will have to trust Google using it right.

What do you guys think, are you excited or not?
